Student voice. Ypsilanti history. World future.
Ypsilanti artist Nick Azzaro worked with Ypsilanti Community Schools' art and social studies classes for the 2025-26 school year to generate statements about Ypsilanti's past, present, and future. Students responded to prompts about influential people, events, and landmarks; from Benjamin Neely and his pro-union initiatives, to Lyman Decatur Norris and his unfortunate role in the Dred Scott v. Emerson (later Sanford) case. These prompts were developed with art and social studies teachers to correspond with existing curricula. Art students created visual 2D and 3D works, and social studies students generated audio through recorded classroom discussions and interviews.
