about.
Student voice. Ypsilanti history. World future.
Ypsilanti artist Nick Azzaro is working with Ypsilanti Community Schools' art and social studies classes to generate statements about Ypsilanti's past, present, and future. Students are responding to prompts about influential people, events, and landmarks; from Benjamin Neely and his pro-union initiatives, to Lyman Norris and his unfortunate role in the Dred Scott v. Emerson (later Sanford) case. These prompts are being developed with art and social studies teachers to correspond with existing curricula. Art students are creating visual 2D and 3D works, and social studies students are generating audio through recorded classroom discussions and interviews. At the end of the year, it will all be combined for a community show.
